My microphone isn't picking up any noise,how can I resolve this?

Well, as the question states, my microphone isn't picking up any sound at all. I am quite sure I have the plugs plugged into the correct drivers (It's a dual-jack headset microphone-Two plugs,Green and Pink). I tried altering the voice recognition or recording but it just shows my own sound system which is the "Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit", and not any other system. Also, my microphone is selected in the Volume Control properties for recording. I am using Windows XP. I'm wondering if or how I can fix this without getting a new computer or something.
